Pre-Season Screening of Elite Young Swimmers
Highthorn Physiotherapy Clinic Ltd were delighted to have been asked by James Richards, head coach of York City Baths Swimming Club, to become involved in a screening programme.
Many sporting disciplines have long since acknowledged the benefits of evaluating the progress made in training by having a benchmark measurement.
In association with James, based on his requirements and our experience of treating swimming injuries, we compiled a relevant set of tests. These were done by Highthorn Physiotherapy physiotherapists at the swimming clubs’ various training venues. The tests were of flexibility and strength in relevant key areas – namely shoulders, spines, pelvis and ankles.
Each swimmer was then given an individual rehabilitation programme specifically targeting their own areas of need. All those tested attended a presentation evening with their parents where all the exercises were demonstrated and practised so as to ensure correct techniques were utilised, thereby optimising potential.
The whole process has proved hugely successful, already assisting in improved times in the pool.
Retesting is imminent so as to specifically measure the progress made.
Thanks to York City Baths Swimming Club for being so innovative!
